LaVane D. Sundem, 89, of Brandon formerly of Garretson died Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Sanford USD Medical Center.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Palisade Lutheran Church, rural Rock County, Minnesota. Visitation with the family present will be from 4-7:00 PM Monday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

LaVane was born October 3, 1926 in Lyon County, Iowa to parents Fritz and Alma (Mundt) Stoltenberg. She grew up in Lyon County and moved with her family to the Hills, Minnesota area. She graduated from Hills High School and then attended Sioux Falls College and earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school in the Garretson-Valley Springs area.

LaVane married Harlowe Sundem on March 11, 1950 in Hills, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in Garretson. After Harlowe returned from the service in 1954 they moved to the farm southeast of Garretson. LaVane worked alongside her husband on the farm until they moved to Brandon in 2011.

She was an active member of Palisade Lutheran Church, where she served as treasurer for many years, taught Sunday school and was an officer of the WELCA. She loved to garden, play cards and in later years made quilts and health kits for the missions at church. The coffee pot was always on and a plate of treats to share with anyone. She was also a member of the Garretson American Legion Auxiliary and a Minnesota Twins and NASCAR fan.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Harlowe, Brandon; a daughter, Deb Sundem, Watertown; a granddaughter, Kari (Brian) Allen, Edina, Minnesota; two brothers, Dale Stoltenberg, Garretson and Dean (Marce) Stoltenberg, Brandon and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Wayne and three brothers, Daryl, Delbert, and Delmar.
