Herman Edward Hotchkiss, 84, of rural Humboldt passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the Dougherty Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Colton. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery.

Herman was born January 23, 1932 at Humboldt to parents Edwin and Ruth (Schrader) Hotchkiss. He attended grade school at Clear Lake Country School and Humboldt High School. He served as a clerk in the Korean Conflict, where he made rank of Sargent.

He married the love of his life Mildred Noem on September 23, 1955. He farmed in the Humboldt area where he took over the family farm when his parents moved to Sioux Falls.

Besides his love of farming, Herman loved to dance, both ballroom and square dancing.

He was treasurer of the Clear Lake Township for a number of years. He was an active member of the Colton United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the congregation and taught Sunday School for many years.

Blessed to share his life are his wife, Mildred; his children, Paul (Myrna) Hotchkiss, Janet (Kraig) Swier, Dennis (Julie) Hotchkiss, David (Karri) Hotchkiss; his grandchildren, Jenae (Neil), Justin (Holly), Tyler (Sarah), Lindsey (Josh), Rebecca (Zeb), Jake, Josh, and Jenny; step grandchildren, Beth (John), Angie, and Lance; five great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and four sisters, Grace (Gary) Lukes, Donna Steele, Ona (Dick) Linebeck, and Alice (Steve) Jesse; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters, Mary Paulson, Darlene Carsrud, Betty Warren, Beverly Wheelhouse, and infant Eva Hotchkiss.
