Florence Selland, 93 of Sioux Falls died Thursday, March 24, 2016 at a Sioux City Hospital after being a patient since February 20, 2016.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Florence was born February 4, 1923 to parents Emma (Brende) and Bennie Moe at Hillside Farm near Renner, which had been homesteaded by her grandparents. Her first eight years of education were at Thompson School, Sverdrup Township, Minnehaha County. At the age of 14, Florence moved to Sioux Falls to live with her grandfather, A. P. Brende and his wife Mollie, so she could attend Washington High School. After graduation, she was employed by the telephone company before her marriage to L. A. Arne Selland on September 2, 1942, at Hubbard, NE. They lived in Watertown until he enlisted in the Army. While he was serving with the 101st Airborne Division in the European Theater, Florence and their daughter lived with relatives and at Fergus Falls, MN and Sioux Falls.
After his discharge in November of 1945, they lived in Bismarck, ND and Sioux Falls before moving to Hillside Farm. In 1961, they moved to a farm near Baltic and then in 1964, they bought a farm near Garretson. During her years as a farm wife she was involved in her children’s school and church activities, serving many years in 4-H and PTA. Florence also was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and women’s groups, first at West Nidaros Lutheran Church and later Zion Lutheran Church.
No one knows how many hours of piano practice she endured as all three of her daughters took lessons through high school. Her son gave her a break with the trombone.
When her husband died in 1974, Florence remained on the farm for 5 years and then decided to start a new life in Bella Vista, AR, where she lived from 1979 to 1999. Florence enjoyed her jobs with Cooper Development Corporation and a bank, but she loved her hours on the golf course. She was very proud of her hole in one.
Returning to Sioux Falls, Florence was able to remain independent until December 14, 2015, when she moved to assisted living at Dakota Dunes.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. During her life she enjoyed gardening on the farm, sewing, knitting, crochet, crewel, painting, reading and golf. She did a lot of cooking on the farm.
She is survived by three daughters, Dainne (Ken) Rose, Dakota City, NE; Jane (Jeff) Stradinger, Isabel, SD; and Kay Gant, McKenzie, TN; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two sister, Eunice (Howard) Thompson, Vancouver, WA; and Doris Ernst, Sioux Falls; a sister in law, Lois Moe, Sioux Falls and forty nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L. A. Arne Selland; a son, Steven; a grandson, Jacob Gant; two sisters, Sena Oaks, and Ella Aasen; four brothers, Art, Dennis, Bennie and Jim Moe; three nieces and five nephews.
