Agnes Otterby, age 94, passed away January 17, 2016 at the Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls.

Agnes Marie Olund was born to John and Hilma (Westman) Olund near Sisseton, South Dakota on April 30, 1921. When Agnes was about 3 years old, they moved to the Baltic, SD area where she attended school, graduating as valedictorian and homecoming queen. After high school graduation, she continued her education at Augustana College and went on to teach in Hendricks, MN. She also taught at Willow Creek School and some years later taught/substituted in Lyons and Colton schools in SD.

On September 7, 1946 she married Curtis Otterby at West Nidaros Lutheran Church. They made their home in Brookings, SD from 1946-1949 while Curtis completed his degree at South Dakota State University. Her employment during that time was in the Dairy Department and the Entomology Department at SDSU.

In January of 1950, they moved to a farm near Crooks, SD. It was here, with Curt, she raised her four children and made her home for the next 47 years. Curt died July 1, 1996. After his death, she moved to an apartment in Sioux Falls in 1997 and then to The Inn on Westport in March of 2012.

Agnes was actively involved in the community and church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the LCW, later known as WELCA and her church “circle” group. She enjoyed belonging to the Garden Club, the Extension Club and the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary.

Agnes was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who loved her family dearly, above all she loved her Lord.

Grateful for having shared her life are her four children: Steven (Kathy) of Mitchell, SD; Kathryn (Steve) Pohl of Brookings, SD; Michael (Mary) of Dakota Dunes, SD; and David (Beth) of Paradise, UT; 9 grandchildren: Matt Otterby, Jackie (Jayson) Plamp, John (Elisia) Pohl, Laurie (Aaron) Grotzinger, Joe Otterby, Dan Otterby, Jimmy (Seanica) Otterby, Amy Otterby, Dawn Otterby and 3 great grandchildren: Ethan and Emma Plamp and Dillon Otterby and a sister in law, Mickey Otterby, Sioux Falls. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents and her brother, Bert Olund and his wife June.

Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 AM Friday at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, Crooks SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Thursday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
