Cathy Jo Benson, age 64, of Sherman, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Luverne Sanford Hospice on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 pm Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Cathy was born October 11, 1951 to Charles & Irene (Nelson) Bonte in Sioux Falls. She grew up and attended K-12 in Garretson. After graduating in 1969, Cathy moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and began her first job at Prudential Insurance Company. Cathy returned to Garretson with her two year old daughter Cara Jo in 1979. On June 25, 1993, Cathy was united in marriage to William (Bill) P. Benson. Bill and Cathy made their home in Sherman until her death.

In 1996 they started their journey to become foster parents to 8 children. They adopted two of their foster children. In 1998 they adopted 8 year old Dorthea “Dottie” Benson and in 2002 7 year old Jesika Ann Benson. In 2006 Cathy became a grandmother to Maiya Marie Strand, who was her everything. Cathy loved all children.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill”; three daughters: Cara Bonte, Garretson, Dorthea “Dottie” Benson, Sioux Falls, and Jesika Benson, Watertown; granddaughter, Maiya Strand; a sister, Lurene (Rick) Vandersnick, Garretson; four brothers: Steve (Karen) Bonte, Garretson, Darrel (Marcia) Bonte, Garretson, Ken Bonte, Beresford, and Dave (Deb) Bonte, Garretson; an aunt, Marjorie Sakry, Jasper, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Irene Bonte; and a sister-in-law, Deborah (Ken) Bonte.
