Michael D. McAreavey of Crooks, SD passed away on December 2, 2015 in Sioux Falls, SD at Sanford Hospital. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, December 5, 2015, at the West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8:00 pm Friday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Tri-Valley School Vo-Ag Program.
Mike was born on May 14, 1949 in Sioux Falls to Martin and Margaret (Huls) McAreavey. He grew up 1 mile south of Buffalo Trading Post on the family farm. He attended Franklin School before graduating from Montrose.
He married Karen Mosenden in Sioux Falls on October 24, 1970. He worked at Fenn’s and Sunshine Foods before moving onto his lifetime passion as a farmer. He also spent several years working at Central States Fire Apparatus.
Mike had a passion for youth and education. He served 15 years on the Tri-Valley School Board, most recently serving as board chairman. This also flowed into several community roles, dearest to him include 4-H, the SD Hunter Safety program, Crooks Optimist Club, Minnehaha County Envision 2035 Task Force and Benton Township Board. He has been a long time member of West Nidaros Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife Karen; 4 children, Jon (Dot) of Watertown, Jeff (Gidget) of Crooks, Matt (Laura) of Crooks, and Megan of Sioux Falls; 9 Grandchildren, Paige, Ireland, Colby, Jay, Kendall, Brendan, Ian, Keira, Blake; 2 brothers, Dave (Thu) of Gallatin, TN, Tim (Kathy) of Omaha, NE; 2 sister-in-law, Diane (Steve) Schertz and Marsha Renier; 1 brother-in-law, Gordy Mosenden; and an extended family too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his parents Marty and Margaret, and sister Connie Wicken.
