Sally Ann Feeney Johnston was born in Toledo, OH to Eleanor (Small) and Wayne I. Feeney on July 14, 1927 and passed away in Aberdeen, SD on November 19, 2015. She was a strong, intelligent woman who instilled the importance of education, art, history, and culture to her two sons, R. Kerry and C. Scott and their families.
Sally graduated from Oak Park (Illinois) High School and went on to attend St. Joseph’s (Presentation) School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD, graduating in 1948. She was married to Bob Johnston on September 2, 1948 in Mitchell. That same year, Sally began working at St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD as a surgical nurse and later as an Instructor of the Clinical Nursing Program through Presentation College. She took pride in teaching the new nurses “how it was done.”
Sally was also a lifelong student of history. She served on the Dacotah Prairie Museum Board and was the acting Interim Director there for a time. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), McPherson Chapter, holding both local and state offices. She was South Dakota’s State DAR Regent 1980-81. She was an avid reader of history and had a keen interest in politics.
Sally and Bob had many similar interests including the Shrine, theater and traveling. They were supporters of the Aberdeen Community Theater as well as Community Concerts and also enjoyed traveling to Minneapolis to see productions. She and Bob travel extensively with his Shrine duties and supported those philanthropic endeavors. They also visited every US state, Canadian Territory and much of Mexico. She never missed opportunities to learn during their travels by visiting state parks, museums, government buildings, and important local attractions.
Sally was also a wonderful entertainer. She loved to host dinner parties and holidays and make special memories with friends and family, including regular card games of bridge with her close friends and family. Sally was also an active member in her church, Chapter BX PEO and Questers.
Sally is survived by her two sons Robert Kerry (Susan) and Charles Scott (Lorna) of Aberdeen, and six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: (R.W) Bo (Melissa) Minnetonka, MN and their children: Ben, Will, and Kaylee. James (Jessica) Aberdeen, SD and their children Gavin, Sterne, and Memory. Micah Denver, CO. Rachel (Eric) St. Paul, MN and their son Andrew. Charlie (Kati) Plymouth, MN and their children: Bobby, Danny, Kieran, Zoey, and Charles Scott. Sally (Jairo) Eagan, MN and their daughter Elena and his son Ben. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren: Doug (Karly) Nohava, Garretson, SD and their children Kalyce, Amity and Norie. Kate Nohava Patrick (Jesse) Sioux Falls and their son Owen. Sally is also survived by a sister Eleanor (Susie) Feeney Schermer of Mt. Dora, FL. Sally is preceded in death by her parents Eleanor C. Small and Wayne I. Feeney, an infant son, Michael, and her husband Robert Walter Johnston.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, Aberdeen.
