Bennie "Bud" Moe

Bennie E Moe was born on August 1st, 1924 on the family homestead near Renner, South Dakota, the son of Bennie Sr. and Emma (Brende) Moe. He died on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015 at Collier Hospice at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado at the age of 91.

Bennie (Bud) grew up in the Renner area and graduated from Baltic High School in 1942. He joined the Army in 1944 and fought in WW-2 with General Patton 3rd Army 4th Infantry Division and helped liberate German concentration camps. He walked throughout Europe, faced war first hand and was a later day part of the D-Day invasion. He told us that he did not enjoy walking on other people’s land and seeing so many suffer.

After his discharge from the military, he returned to the family farm. He was united in marriage to Colleen (Morton) Moe in 1949 and they remained married for 59 years until her death in 2008. They lived in Sioux Falls and together they raised 4 boys. Their household also welcomed a teenage neighbor boy from a troubled home to live with them. Bud and his family were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

He retired from 34 years of working at Zip Feed Mills at the age of 57 where he was the head of Trucking and Sales. He served on the State Officers Board of the South Dakota Associated Motor Carriers for 2 terms. He was a proud member of the American Legion, DAV and AMVETS. When he retired he and Colleen were empty nesters so they moved to Custer SD to live a new life, a more rural lifestyle and enjoy a new home and surroundings. Bud and Colleen were active members of Custer Fellowship (Lutheran) in Custer. Bud was active in the Custer American Legion and the Color Guard and honored veterans in military funerals and in Black Hills parades.
Of course, memories abound but perhaps more important is what remains of the times we had. Bud had a solid, grounded perspective. He respected and listened to others. He put family first and did everything he could to provide comfort and security. His legacy was the basic values he left: stability, honesty, basic money values, appreciation and love for extended family members, hard work and independence. He enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards, watching sports and also hunting deer, elk antelope and pheasants. On annual 2 week vacations, he showed his family the United States.

His sons, extended family members and many other people greatly appreciated his influence. Grateful for having shared his life are his surviving sisters: Eunice Thompson, Florence Selland and Doris Ernst; 4 sons:Tom, Dave (Nancy), Mike Morton (Laurie) and Daniel (Kelie); 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; extended family members and many others.

Visitation will be at the Minnehaha Funeral Home Baltic on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 5-7:00 PM Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, November 14, 2015, at West Nidaros Lutheran Church Crooks SD. Burial will be in the West Nidaros Cemetery.
