Gertie "Toots" J. Vanderhoff

Gertie” Toots” Vanderhoff, 94, formerly of Hartford passed away Friday, October 30, 2015 at Palisade HealthCare Community in Garretson, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Friday, November 6, 2015 at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks, SD. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be prior to service time. Memorials may be directed to Benton Lutheran WELCA.

Gertie was born March 16, 1921 to John and Bertha (Jurgens) Schmidt in the Chancellor, SD area. She graduated from Hartford High School.

Gertie married J. Duane Vanderhoff June 17, 1939. They had four children. Gertie and Duane farmed in the Lyons, SD area. Gertie had been at Helping Hands Assisted Living in Brandon, SD since 2008 and recently moved to Palisade Health Center in Garretson, SD.

Gertie belonged to Benton Lutheran Church. She enjoyed making apple and rhubarb pies and quilting with the ladies group at the church. She liked to make baptismal napkins and never missed a chance to play Bingo. She also belonged to the Bethany Auxiliary.

Gertie is survived by her son, Donald (Lynette) Vanderhoff; daughter, Janet (Dale) Sample; son-in-law, Dick Kloxin; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

Gertie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane; two daughters, Joanne Kloxin and Judy Nytroe and thirteen siblings; brothers, Harm, Orville, Jack and Fred and sisters, Johanna Schmidt, Bertha Schmidt, Nancy Rubel, Sophie Hunter, Margaret Jensen, Minn Erickson, Jane Gott, Beverly Bornitz and Florence Lueth.
