Robert "Bob" McMahon, 88, of rural Colton, died suddenly Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Monday at the church, with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 pm.
Robert “Bob” McMahon was born on the family farm near Bridgewater, SD on January 4, 1927 to Frank and Angela (Hoffman) McMahon. Bob grew up on a farm outside of Hartford and attended Lyons High School. After graduation he continued to help his dad on the farm and played amateur baseball with the Montrose team. He joined the South Dakota Air National Guard and trained to become an electrician. Bob was called to active service with the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Bob married the love of his life Carol Young on October 30, 1951 at St. George Catholic Church, where they continued to be lifelong members. Bob and Carol began farming east of Lyons raising kids, cows, and corn. He took up feed sales with the W.R. Grace Company in 1969. Bob enjoyed selling feed as he was able to spend his days visiting with neighbors and friends over coffee and helping them out on their farms. In 1970, Bob moved his family northwest of Lyons to their current farm. Bob continued to sell feed for 29 years before retiring. Retirement didn’t slow Bob down; it just gave him more time to spend with his nine grandchildren and his Holsteins. It also allowed him to watch more baseball games. It didn’t matter who was playing, Bob was always cheering for the Twins. Through it all, Bob remained devoted to family, faith, farming, and baseball.
Bob received an unexpected ticket to the greatest World Series on Wednesday afternoon. He had finished mowing the lawn, picking apples, and running errands in Sioux Falls. As always he was quick to answer the call and kept his lifelong record intact of never spending a night in the hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol, his children: Michael (Lois) of Harrisburg, SD, Greg of Seattle, WA, Barbara of Raleigh, NC, Lori (Morris) Wegehaupt of Parkston, SD, Linda of McCook, NE, Mary of Sioux Falls, SD, and Karen (Lester) Mathieu of Baltic, SD, his nine grandchildren: Robert, Angela, Jordan, Kelsey, Morgan, Courtnei, Logan, Mason, and Aubrey, his brother Duane (Darlene) of Sioux Falls, SD, sister-in-law Mary of Hartford, SD, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Francis and George, and his sister Patricia Healy.
