George Leonard Saarloos, age 84, of Sioux Falls, died on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Luther Manor in Sioux Falls. Private family services will be held Sunday, September 20, 2015. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Garretson.

George was born on August 4, 1931, in Sioux Falls to Jacob Leonard and Grace Dorothy (Schmitt) Saarloos. He grew up on a farm eight miles west of Garretson. At the age of 8 he moved with his family to Scotland, South Dakota, until returning to Garretson in 1945 when his father bought the Garretson Hatchery. He graduated from Garretson High School in 1949, and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for four years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in Korea, and later attended the University of Iowa where he studied math of insurance.

George worked in the insurance industry in Los Angeles and Omaha, as well as for a grocery store in Chicago. He started working as an actuary for the State of Minnesota in 1959 and retired in 1986.

Grateful for having shared his life are his sister: Gloria Ludolph of Pipestone, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings John Saarloos, Paul Saarloos, and Bill Saarloos.
