J. W. Van Zanten, 84, of Colton died Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at his home.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Faith Community Church, Colton. Private family burial will precede the service at the Colton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at the church.
Jacob William Van Zanten was born Mary 7, 1931 in rural Humboldt to parents Cornelius and Kate (Paauw) Van Zanten. He attended Carlberg Country School and Lyons High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served 11 months in Korea in crash and rescue and then was assigned to Moses Lake, Washington where he was in fire and crash rescue.
He married Barbara Heimbigner June 27, 1954 and lived at Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, Washington. After his discharge they moved to Colton and farmed in the Buffalo Trading Post area north of Humboldt for 40 years. They later moved to acreage near Colton.
He served on the church board, Colton Elevator board, Christian School board, and was a member of the Colton American Legion and helped organizing the Colton Memorial at Red way Park. He was also a life time member of Faith Community Church.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Barbara, Colton; his children, Brian (Fiancé Penny Lane) Van Zanten, Sioux Falls; Ronald (Marie Beth) Van Zanten; Terri (Randy) Van Wyhe, Pine Island, Minnesota; Brenda (Dave) Jorgenson, Colton; Tami (James) Draper, Des Moines, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; his siblings, Melvin Van Zanten, Alice Burgers, and Nellie Burgers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister and a grandson.
