Julia J. Burgers, 87, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Colton, SD went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Faith Community Church in Colton, SD. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Faith Community Church in Colton.

Julia was born on March 3, 1928, in Colton, SD to parents, Theodore and Marie (Bykerk) Koopman. In 1946, Julia graduated from Colton High School and then worked as a bookkeeper at Willers Truck Service and Sioux Valley Hospital.

On June 2, 1948, Julia married the love of her life, Elmer Burgers and they enjoyed 67 years together. They farmed southwest of Colton for 52 years, retired and moved into Colton. In March, 2014, they moved to Prairie Creek Lodge in Sioux Falls, SD.

Julia was baptized and made Profession of Faith in the Colton Christian Reformed Church. She was very active in her church as a Sunday School teacher and GEMS counselor as well as being an organist for over 65 years. She also gave piano, organ and accordion lessons to many children.

Traveling, assisting with disaster relief in several states, attending music and sporting activities of her children and grandchildren were her passion. Another passion was that of sewing; Julia was an excellent seamstress and even made her own wedding dress.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband, Elmer; her three children, Stan (Shirley) Burgers, Stu (Deb) Burgers, Laurie (Vance) Brower; seven grandchildren, Sonya (Howie) Silleck, Shaun Burgers, Travis (Lynne) Burgers, Rachael (Stephen) Dekker, Bryan (Katie) Burgers, Jeremy Brower and Alex (Tanner) Overweg; five great-grandchildren, Mirabelle, Haydn, Taylee, Brexton and Trent; two sisters, Joyce (Frank) Bierling and Mary (Rich ) Fedders; one brother, Theodore, Jr. (Diane) Koopman.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Marie; a brother, Alfred; an infant son and a grandson, Seth.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sioux Falls Christian School, Hope Haven or a Christian charity of your choice.
