Duane Sidney Allan

Duane Sidney Allan, age 86, of Garretson, died on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Friday, July 3, 2015, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, with interment to follow at the Summit Hill Cemetery, rural Garretson. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

Duane was born June 6, 1929 to Sidney and Elenora (Reemts) Allan on the Alex Allan Homestead. He resided with his family for 10 years until August of 1939 when he was placed in the disabilities school in Redfield, South Dakota. That was a very sad day for him and his family. Duane was normal at birth; however injuries at delivery caused him to hemorrhage and ultimately caused his many disabilities.


After 57 years at Redfield, the governor ordered all residents 55 years and older to be placed in nursing homes. On January 21, 1997, Duane entered Palisade Manor in Garretson. His sister Marlene spent many days over the years watching over him and giving him car rides. He so looked forward to Marlene’s visits. Duane was very intelligent.


Those left to mourn his loss are his sisters: Marlene Farrand of Sioux Falls and Mavis Norgaard of Luverne, MN; several nieces and nephews; and many friends at Palisade Manor. He was preceded in death by his parents.
