Rose Nell Clarice Johnson, age 89, of Garretson, died on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Palisade Healthcare Community in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 11 AM Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Rose was born on October 13, 1925, to Bendick and Rosa (Odegaard) Nelson, in Hudson, South Dakota. She graduated from Hudson High School and taught school prior to her marriage. On January 19, 1945, she married Leslie Johnson at Hudson. The couple moved to Wessington Springs where they farmed until moving to Garretson in 1946. Rose was a cook for the nursing home and senior nutrition program in Garretson. She and Leslie also operated Les’s Tap & Grill for nearly 10 years until retiring in 1982. Leslie passed away on October 10, 1991. Rose was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Red Hat Society, and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking, but loved visiting with people most of all.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Donna (John) Winberg, Deephaven, MN, Jon (Lori) Johnson, Minneapolis, MN, Ben Johnson, Garretson, and Brian Johnson, Shelton, WA; two grandchildren: Jennifer (Steve) Skavnak, Edina, MN, and Robert Winberg, Minneapolis, MN; two great-grandchildren: Desmond and Winnie Skavnak, Edina, MN; and three brothers: Curtis (Dee) Nelson, Sioux Falls, Bennet (Vera) Nelson, Cherokee, IA, and Jim (Carol) Nelson, Davis, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Darrell, two brothers, Donald and Robert, and three sisters: Evelyn Lewis, Mildred Embrock, and Lila Larsen.
