Melvin Nesheim Jr. 87, of Baltic died Friday, December 5, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Lennox.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Baltic Lutheran Church, Baltic. Burial will be in the Norway Cemetery, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Melvin was born September 21, 1927 to parents Melvin and Anna (Iverson) Nesheim Sr. near Sherman, South Dakota. He attended country school and entered the United States Army and served in Japan during World War II.
He married Betty Johnson August 31, 1956 in Sioux Falls. They lived in Sioux Falls and Hartford before moving to Baltic in 1975. Junior worked for the Sioux Falls Street Department, Lindsey Construction and later for local farmers in the Baltic area. Betty died July 28, 1995.
He was a member of the Baltic Lutheran Church and the Baltic American Legion.
Also known as June Bug or J. R., he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with family and friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Sandy (Darwin) Mechels, Sioux Falls; Nancy Arneson, Madison; Melvin Nesheim, Sioux Falls; John (Michele) Nesheim, Crooks; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Pugh, Sioux Falls and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, grandson, Chad Mechels; three brothers and three sisters.
