Herman George Opp, 87, of Dell Rapids formerly of Isabel passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM MST Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the United Church of Christ In Isabel. Visitation will be from 6-7:00 PM MST Tuesday at the church.
Herman was born February 20, 1926 in Eureka, South Dakota to parents Fred and Rose (Heimrich) Opp and later moved with his family to rural Isabel, where he attended school. He dropped out of high school and enlisted in the United State Navy, ending up in the Fighting Sea Bees in the South Pacific.
In 1948 he married Ramona Rempfer. He worked for the South Dakota Highway Department and was known to be the first man to have a bowling alley in Isabel. He moved to Marion, South Dakota in 1960 where he managed a bowling alley until 1970. He and Monie lived in Tucson, Arizona and was employed at a copper mine. He returned to Sioux Falls for several years and then bought a farm in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. He and Monie divorced there and he then managed a Mall until he retired and moved back to Isabel.
Grateful for having shared his life are sons, Terry and Barb Opp, Baltic, Don and Rob Opp, Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Stefanie, Tracie, Heather, and Dillon and numerous great grandchildren, a brother, Ed Opp, St Paul, MN; sisters, Martha Scholl, Isabel; Elsie Mhyer, Tampa, FL; Alice Lutz, Coeur dā Alene, ID; Gladys Gay, Bettendorf, IA and Lorraine Griffis, Council Bluffs, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Alvin and Albert and sisters, Hilda, Alma, Leona, and Esther.
