Lloyd Allen Zweep, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at his home in Garretson following a short struggle with cancer. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, December 6, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM Thursday, with the family present from 5:30-8:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Lloyd Allen Zweep was born April 9, 1929, to John and Catherine (Leichtman) Zweep of Garretson. He grew up on a farm and attended country school, graduating from Garretson High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, spending most of his time in Germany. He returned to farm with his dad near Garretson. He married Darlene Robbins on August 28, 1955 in Brookings, South Dakota. They farmed near Corson and Garretson before moving to his family farm in February 1964, where they lived for 45 years. They moved into Garretson in May 1999, but he continued to be active in the farming business.

Lloyd was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, life member and past commander of the Garretson American Legion where he also held various other positions. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and a member of the 40 & 8. He served on various church boards, the Edison Township Board, and was on the Splitrock Telephone Board for 21 years. He enjoyed coffee with boys uptown after moving to town. Lloyd loved spending time with his family, and having his children and grandchildren close was very special. When great-grandchildren Jordyn and Avery visited it always brought a smile to his face.

Over the years, Lloyd attended many of his children and grandchildren’s sporting and musical events. He had many fishing and hunting trips with his family. He also enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends. But “once a farmer, always a farmer”. He enjoyed planting through harvest. He made many trips to the farm after retiring to help where he could. He loved caring for livestock and driving the countryside checking on crops.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Darlene of Garretson; children: Mark (Julie) Zweep of Sioux Falls, Dale (Cheryl Scholl) Zweep of Garretson, and Lisa (Brad) Stensland of Garretson; grandchildren: Jesse (Jamie Kiss) Zweep of Manley, NE, Joel (Jennifer) Zweep of Garretson, Thomas (Dawn) Zweep of Garretson, Abby (Ryan) Brost of Sioux Falls, Emily (Thomas) Leuthold of Lacey, WA, Leah (Jason) Williamson of Garretson, and Kayli (Michael) Coburn of Garretson; great-grandchildren: Jordyn and Avery of Garretson; a brother, Donald (Flora) Zweep of Brandon; a sister, Devonna (Donald) Etrheim of Jasper, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his granddaughter, Jacquie Zweep.
