Marian Lucille Anderson, age 84, died on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Dougherty Hospice House after a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 12, 2013, at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 PM Wednesday, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM, and a Wake Service at 7:30 PM at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.
Marian was born February 12, 1929 at the DeVal Hospital in Garretson to Charles and Lucy (Floming) Vandersnick. Marian and her only sister, Betty, lived and worked on the family farm west of Garretson. Marian attended North Central Dist #34 School through the 8th grade. She then attended Garretson High School and graduated in 1947.
Marian married Byron U. Anderson on August 12, 1947 at the St. Rose of Lima Rectory in Garretson. Byron and Marian then moved to Sioux Falls until 1952 when they moved back to the Vandersnick family farm where they helped Charlie and Lucy farm. On May 6, 1958, their only son Dennis was born.
Marian was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, Garretson Senior Citizens, Garretson Historical Society, Extension and the Tuesday Ladies Bowling League. She loved to bowl until she was unable due to her health.
Marian is lovingly remembered by her son Dennis (Gail) of Garretson; three grandsons: Zachary of Starbuck, MN, Jacob of Rapid City, and Alex of Garretson; one sister, Betty Holzapfel of Garretson; three sisters-in-law: Helen Woodhouse of Sioux Falls, Dorcas Youel of Dell Rapids, and Rhoda (John) Otten of Sioux Falls; two brothers-in-law: Donald (Dorothy) Anderson of Yankton and Gordon (Verlynn) Anderson of Dell Rapids, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, a special cousin, Marjorie Sakry; her loving companions, Scruff and Cat; and many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron; a daughter, Linda; her parents, Charlie and Lucy Vandersnick; her parents-in-law, Ole and Emma Anderson; and brothers-in-law: Dennis Holzapfel, Merle Anderson and Warren Anderson.
Marian loved all her pets throughout the years and requested that her memorials be given to the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
