Dorothy L. Smith, 86, of Sioux Falls formerly of Valley Springs died Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Dow Rummel Village.

Funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Halladay-Peterson Chapel at Dow Rummel. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Valley Springs.

Dorothy Lucille Robbins was born to parents Oscar and Bernice (Edgington) Robbins on the family farm near Philip, South Dakota. The family moved to Patricia, South Dakota in 1936 where she finished elementary school and graduated from Bennett County High School in 1945. She attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and taught on a war permit for one year in Washabaugh County. She then worked two years in the ASCS Office in Philip.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Gilbert Smith at Ben Clare United Methodist Church on February 19, 1948. They farmed for 43 years near Valley Springs. Dorothy was employed from 1962 to 1972 as a nurse’s aid at McKennan Hospital, from 1979 to 1988 at Brenda’s Pastries in Brandon and from 1988 to 1996 at Augustana Campus Learning Center as a cook. The couple moved into Valley Springs in 1991.

Dorothy was baptized at Lyndsey Memorial Presbyterian Church in Martin in 1943. She was a member of Ben Clare United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women since 1948, where she taught Sunday school and was the Sunday school Superintendent. She also was a member of the Minnehaha County & State Young Men and Women Alumni, the Valley Springs American Legion Auxiliary and the Sunshine Extension Club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Leslie Smith, Rapid City, Dean (Sun Ok) Smith, Mackenbach, Germany, Elaine (Dennis) Johnson, Baltic; five grandchildren, Dean Smith Jr, Regina Smith (Aurel), Lyndsay Smith, Dustin & Craig Johnson; a daughter in law, Jackie Koupal, Rapid City; and other beloved family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, a son Ray Smith, a brother Leavitt Robbins and a sister Norma Lyon.
