Virginia Ruth (Kneip) Berdahl of Colton, then Brookings, died peacefully at age 82 among family on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Sanford USD Medical Center under hospice care.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday, December 21, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Colton, with burial at St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM Thursday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.

Virginia was born on July 31, 1930 to Irvin and Ruth (Carlson) Kneip. After growing up in Oak Park and Villa Park (Chicago suburbs) and graduating from York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, Virginia mowed with her parents and brother to Colton in 1948, enrolling at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.

Virginia married Juel Berdahl on September 16, 1950. They raised their six children on the farm, and in addition, were foster parents to 114 children through Lutheran Social Services.

Virginia was very active in her church, including involvement and leadership in quilting and ladies aid. She had been a substitute organist, taught piano lessons, and was a 4-H leader for 25 years.

She is survived by her children, Priscilla (David) Storm of Brookings, Becky Berdahl of Minneapolis, Dan (Karen) Berdahl of Sioux Falls; Tim (Laura) Berdahl of Duluth, MN, Mark (Laura) Berdahl of Northfield, MN, and Phil (Julie) Berdahl of Forest, VA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Brian Storm, Rachel Storm, Kevin Strom, Josh Berdahl, Miranda Berdahl, Sanna Berdahl, Karin Berdahl, Mara Berdahl, Greta Berdahl, Leif Berdahl, and Brittany Secory; 6 great grandchildren, Isaac, Brooklyn, Bricyn, Luke, Elijah, and Aidan; a brother, Don (Gwen) Kneip, Jasper and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Juel on November 22, 2012.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church of Colton, Lutheran Social Services, or Luther Seminary.
