Harvey Hanson, 87, of Crooks died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Southridge Health Care Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Burial will be in the Benton Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at the church. Minnehaha Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Harvey was born on the family homestead April 3, 1925 to Herbert and Anna (Arvidson) Hanson. He attended the Byg Country School and Lyons School. He enlisted in the Navy, May 1944 and served as a signalman on the USS Oneida in the South Pacific until May 1946.
Harvey married Beverly Magness in Chester on November 9, 1947. He farmed and lived on the homestead for 79 years. He also worked at Cenex Seed in Ellis for 15 years, retiring in 1983. They moved into Crooks in July 2004. Beverly died February 24, 2009. Harvey went to Touchmark at All saints in March of 2011 and this month he moved to Southridge Health Care Center.
He was a lifetime member of Benton Lutheran Church, Crooks VFW and the Urban-Hanson American Legion in Hartford.
Harvey had a great sense of humor, enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and gardening. He and Beverly made many trips to their trailer at North Buffalo Lake. He also loved to listen to music, especially gospel and big band. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a joy to him. A special memory for him was the trip to Washington, DC on the Honor Flight in August of 2010.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Jackie (Jim) Johnson and Randy Hanson, all of Crooks; three grandchildren, Megan (Derek) Kindelspire, Reid Johnson, and Shari (Clint) Jenner; three great grandchildren, Brynn and Jaxson Kindelspire and Carson Jenner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alice Carson, and brothers, Arnold, Harry, and Wendell.
