Jacob Uithoven

Jacob Uithoven was born on May 13, 1929 to Markus and Carrie (Van Maanen) Uithoven in Rock County, Minnesota. He grew up in the Hartford and Colton, South Dakota areas. His father passed away when he was twelve and was very fortunate to have Gerrit John Topp as his stepfather. He married Dorothy Warnes December 16, 1947 in Colton. They lived on a farm 5 miles from Colton for 52 years and moved into Colton in 2002. Jake moved into the Dell Rapids nursing home in 2006 because of complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Jake was dedicated to providing for his family by farming and by working at both Northwestern Bank and John Morrells. Jake was a member of First Reformed Church, Colton. He enjoyed travel, roller skating, music, and visiting with both friends and strangers. Jake was a compassionate and caring man who was always willing to help people in time of need.

Jake died Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Avera Dells Area Health Center in Dell Rapids.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy Uithoven, Colton; children, Sherry Montoya (Sioux Falls, SD), Keith (Baltimore, MD), Darrel (Raleigh, NC), and Sandra Shumaker (Vermillion, SD); five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carrie Zuiderhof, April 27, 1985; and a son, Terry Uithoven, January 2, 1981.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 8, 2012 at First Reformed Church, Colton. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
