Leland Nelson, 88, of Sioux Falls passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage.
Funeral service has been planned for 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 909 W. 33rd St. Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Leland Elwood Monroe Nelson was born January 18, 1924 to Iver and Annie (Brekke) Nelson at Renner. He graduated from Baltic High School and received an Agriculture Education degree from South Dakota State University in 1951.
He was united in marriage to Bernice Hoiness in 1952. They lived in Clear Lake, South Dakota until 1957 when they moved to Sioux Falls. He was a sales representative for an agricultural business until 1977 when he started their business, Grain Dryers Inc.; which he operated until 2000. He also was actively involved in farming until 2010.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was a big fan of his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Adrian and an infant nephew, James.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bernice, Sioux Falls; two daughters, Nancy (Tom) McGraw, West Des Moines, Iowa and Dawn (Rick) Backer, Sioux Falls; two grandsons, Corey and Austin Backer; two sisters, Frances Rogers, Los Alamos, New Mexico and Mary Lee, Bismarck, North Dakota and several nieces and nephews.
