Ruby Julson

Ruby Iva Julson, 76, of Garretson, passed away on March 7, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice after a heroic battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday March 11, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday March 10, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson with family present from 5:00-8:00.

Ruby was born during a snowstorm on January 21, 1936 to Harold and Junie (Edmundson) Remme on the family farm near Sherman, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Palisades Lutheran Church in rural Garretson. Ruby attended grade school in Sherman until the fourth grade, then continued her schooling at Garretson High School and graduated in 1954. Ruby was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson.

Ruby married Paul Julson, the love of her life, on June 5, 1955 at Palisades Lutheran Church. They lived on the Julson farmstead until they moved to Garretson in 1960. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed family gatherings and her grandchildren’s activities. She enjoyed sharing summer life at Lake Poinsett with family and friends fishing from the dock, playing card games, planting flowers, and watching birds at the feeders. Ruby was a fantastic cook and especially renowned for her creamy scalloped potatoes and baked beans. Even as her illness worsened, Ruby never complained and routinely put the needs and comfort of others ahead of her own. Her smile, strength and courage were an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband Paul, her children Pamela and Gary Larson, Brookings, Wayne Julson, Garretson, Barb and Greg Franka, Garretson, and Beverly and Steven Howe, Sherman, eight grandchildren, Ross and Alyssa Larson, Jeremy and Jared Franka, Brad, James, Scott, and Thomas Howe, one great granddaughter Aryanna Franka, brother Junell and June Remme, Motely, Minnesota, sister Janet and Wilbur Anderson, Rochester Minnesota and sister-in-law Bev Remme, Jasper, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Paula, and brother Ronald Remme.
