Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, February 24, 2012 at First Lutheran Church, Colton. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM Thursday with the family present at 6:00 PM at the church.
Viola “Vi” DeJong was born on July 5, 1924, in Bridgewater, South Dakota, to John and Emma (Engelbrecht) Mews. She moved to the Colton area as a child and attended school there. She married Charles DeJong on September 17, 1942 and farmed in the area before moving into Colton. She worked at several different places in the area. Charles died on December 28, 1983.
Viola loved spending time with her grandkids and going off to play bingo. She would often be seen with a deck of cards, ready for action. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Colton. She also spent a few years at the Colton Assisted Living Center, where she kept very active.
Viola entered into Heaven on Sunday, February 19, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, with her family at her side at the age of 87.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Dennis (Karla) DeJong, Fessenden, ND; Harvey (Marcella) DeJong, Selby; BeLinda (Walt) Hanisch, Humboldt; Pam (special friend, Glenn Vonk) Blakney, Sioux Falls; Kendall (Judd) DeJong, Colton; daughter-in-law, Gail DeJong, Sioux Falls; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; two sons: Pete and Michael; grandson, Stacey; granddaughter, Teresa; three great-grandsons: Dylan, Dustin, and Justin; two brothers: Fred and Harvey Mews; and a sister, Darlene Ramse.
