Marcella “Marcie” Artz, 85, formerly of Northville, SD, died on September 24, 2011, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Spearfish, South Dakota, with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Burial will be held at 9:00 A.M. Monday, October 24, at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota.
Marcella was born February 27, 1926 in rural Mina, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Margaret Dutenhoeffer. Marcie married Lambert Artz September 11, 1946. Together they farmed near Mina, Ipswich, and Northville, South Dakota. After moving from the farm, they traveled to Kansas as “Artz Harvestors” working north to the Dakotas with an inspired crew. “Mother Goose and The Gander”, as they were affectionately referred, continued the journey until 1984 when they began spending winters in Yuma, Arizona and their summers as campground hosts in Yankton, South Dakota.
She is survived by her six children: Robert (Karol) of Ashton, SD, Sharal (Richard) Akin of Garretson, SD, Allen (Paula) of Highland, CA, Kevin (Patti) of Yankton, SD, David of Wolsey, SD, and Lisa (Blayne) Sandidge of Sturgis, SD; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hildi (Jack) Barger, Lake Havasu, AZ, Carol (Roy) Volk, Lake Havasu, AZ, Diane (Ron) Ross, Lincoln, NE, and Kathy (Rich) Kriech, Indio, CA; three brothers: Andrew (Bernice), Romona, CA, Kenny, El Cajon, CA , and Duane (Thelma), Scottsbluff, NE.
Marcie was preceded in death by her husband in 2005; and three brothers: William, Arthur and Wilbert Dutenhoeffer.
