Melvin Byg

Melvin Woodrow Byg, 92, died peacefully on August 24, 2011 at his home.

Funeral services will be at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks, on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8:00 PM on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.

Melvin was born on May 24, 1919 to Nels and Rose (Pearson) Byg on the family farm near Hartford. He attended the Byg county school district #93. His life’s calling was being a farmer and Grade A milk producer.

He served as a board member of the Sioux Valley Milk Producers and the Byg district #93 school board. In his younger years he was an avid hunter. His retirement years were spent restoring antique cars.

On November 29, 1942, he married Ruth Leona Orstad. To this union four children were born.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ruth; children, Rosemary (Gilbert) Mohrhauser, Hartford; Jerald (Alta) Byg, Ames, Iowa; Elizabeth (Alan) Van Liere, Litchfield, Minnesota; Evelyn (John) Holdaway, Rapid City; fourteen grandchildren and ten and a half great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers, Cecil and Delbert (Bud) and sisters Erma Heckman and June Stringfield.
