Virginia Gulbranson

Virginia L. Gulbranson, 92, of Garretson, died on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Garretson Community Ambulance or the Palisade Manor Van Fund.

Virginia was born on December 6, 1918 to John and Cora (Pearson) Schmidt in Holland, MN. At a young age she moved to Garretson and graduated from high school in 1936. She married her high school sweetheart, Curtis Gulbranson, on October 6, 1940. Virginia was a graduate of Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. She worked for the government during World War II, following her husband to Missouri and California until he was deployed. After the war, they started a family, building a home in Garretson where she lived for 56 years and raised four children. Virginia worked as a postal clerk in Garretson from 1963-1984 when she retired.

Virginia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Garretson Senior Citizens. She enjoyed shopping, supervising the kitchen and gardening. She had a dry sense of humor and loved spending time with and visiting her family.

Virginia is survived by 3 daughters: Marcia (Arlan) Thompson of Owatonna, MN; Jan (Jerry) Kjergaard of Willmar, MN and Diane (Gene) Schubert of Coralville, IA; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and a sister, Jean Breckenridge of Yankton, SD. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband in 1961, and a son, Joel in 1973.
