Shirley M. Schreurs, 78, of Baltic, SD passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Dougherty Hospice House after a short illness.
Shirley was born on July 31, 1932 to Norbert and Agnes Heinemann. She grew up on a farm in Dell Rapids along with 7 sisters and 2 brothers. She graduated from St. Mary High School and went on to become a Registered Nurse.
Shirley married Duane Schreurs and together raised 6 children.
Shirley was the Minnehaha County Nurse for 6 years. She joined her husband Duane to spend 2 years in Ecuador, South America with the Peace Corps. She finished her career working at Palisades Manor in Garretson.
In the last couple of years, Shirley & Duane spent a lot of time at their homes in Whitewood and Faith; they worked hard together and played cards with their friends. Shirley had a vibrant personality and loved everyone unconditionally. She had such a generous spirit. She laughed so much of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Duane; daughters, Mary (Mike) Sweeney-Gengler, Colman and Lori (Lance) Roberts, Pierre; sons, Jeff (Paula), Garretson and John (Jennifer), Dell Rapids; son-in-law, Jim Baumberger; sisters, Evelyn (Gene) Gannon, Arlene McFarlane, Ethel Ketelsleger, Janice (Jerry) Kritzer; brother, Jerry (Joan) Heinemann; 16 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren.
Shirley is preceded in death by daughters, Kim Schreurs and Kathy Baumberger; her Mom & Dad; her sisters, Vivian, Kay, and Mary; brother, Bobby; son-in-law, Russell Sweeney; grandchild, Matthew Sweeney and great-grandchild, Kandyce Schreurs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids on Monday, June 20, 2011.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 19th beginning at 2:00 PM with the family present from 4-8:00 PM with a wake service and rosary at 7:00 PM, all at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.
