Cheryl Van Duyn, 66, of Colton died suddenly May 3, 2011 at her home.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, May 6, 2011 at First Lutheran Church, Colton. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 PM Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
Cheryl was born March 16, 1945 in Mitchell to parents Clayton and Treva (Moeller) Aker. As a small child she moved with her parents to the Colton area. After the death of her father, her mother married Carl Hass and she grew up with them near Colton and graduated from Franklin High School. She then attended Stewart School of Hairstyling.
Cheryl married Bill Van Duyn March 15, 1965 in Luverne, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in Colton and moved to California for a couple of years before returning to Colton in 1968. She worked at Marilyn’s Beauty Shop, which she later bought and operated Cheryl’s Beauty Shop for twenty years. She also fixed hair for the Minnehaha Funeral Home for forty years. After selling the beauty shop, she worked at Sam’s, The Cracker Barrel and the Downtown Holiday Inn.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, served as Mayor of Colton, and enjoyed being with people, especially her grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Bill, Colton, children, Cindy (Tom) Haiar and Craig Van Duyn, both of Sioux Falls, grandchildren, Toni, Stephanie, Derek, Megan, Olivia and Savana; a special nephew, Lee (Nicole) Hartmann, Sioux Falls; sister, Paula (Richard) Eulberg, Dell Rapids; brothers, Timothy (Camilla) Aker, Worthington, MN; Jon (Patti) Hass, Chester; Dean Hass, Rapid City; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father Clayton, mother, Treva, father Carl, and her sister, Linda.
