Evelyn Clarine (Nelson) Winterton, age 88, of rural Sherman, died on March 10, 2011 at Avera Dells Area Health Center in Dell Rapids. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 14, at Zion Lutheran Church, 212 Center Ave., Garretson, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 13 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, 101 S. Leslie Dr., Garretson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the South Highland Cemetery Fund, Garretson Food Pantry, the Garretson Ambulance, or Garretson Fire Department.
Evelyn was born October 16, 1922, to Gillert and Charlotte Nelson. She grew up on a farm near Jasper, MN, attended her first eight years at a nearby country school, and completed high school in Jasper. After graduation, Evelyn traveled weekly by train from Jasper to Sioux Falls to work at John Morrells and later at Fantles. On September 14, 1947, Evelyn and Gordon were married in a double wedding ceremony with Betty (Winterton) and Bob Johnson at Jasper Lutheran Church in Jasper, MN. Following their marriage, Evelyn devoted her time to her husband and children on the family’s farm.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 63 years, Gordon, and their children and spouses: James (Julie) Winterton, Storm Lake, IA; Karen (Bruce) Rekstad, Garretson; Shirley (Bob) Garry, Sioux Falls; Gary (Kathy) Winterton, Sherman; Paul (Peggy) Winterton, Sherman; Neil (Colleen) Winterton, Sherman; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and a sister Carolyn (Don) Grant, Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Betty and Bob Johnson, Brandon; Doris and Ordell Krogstad, Baltic; Madeline and Ordell Winterton, Sherman; Beverly and Kenneth Winterton, Madison; Merlyn Winterton, Colorado Springs, CO; Janet and Mike Marsh, Leawood, KS; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Cynthia; son Keith; brothers Glenn and Verlyn; and sisters –in –law Elsie Nelson and Louise Winterton.
